June spotlight: DeKalb County

June 4, 2012

This month, Alive Hospice celebrates DeKalb County. Known for its scenic beauty, fiddling, agriculture and more, DeKalb County is a community like no other. It's also one of the 12 Middle Tennessee counties served by Alive Hospice.

More than 18,000 people reside in DeKalb County today.

DeKalb County dates back to 1837. It was named for Gen. Johann DeKalb, a German baron and American Revolutionary War hero who was killed in 1780.

Within DeKalb County are 4 towns: Smithville, Alexandria, Liberty and Dowelltown.

Smithville, the county seat of DeKalb County, was named for Samuel Granville Smith, a Tennessee state senator and secretary of state.

DeKalb County is the home of the scenic Center Hill Lake, which offers boating, fishing, picnic shelters, hunting, swimming, hiking trails and more.

The two-day Smithville Fiddlers' Jamboree and Craft Festival is an annual tradition in DeKalb County. The 41st annual festival will be held July 6-7, 2012.

The late Joe L. Evins, who hailed from DeKalb County, served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 30 years (1946-1977). Upon his retirement, he was Tennessee's longest-serving member of the U.S. House. Evins served under six U.S. presidents: Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford.
