Flashbacks

Strolling down the path toward recovery from grief, we may have an occasion to stub our toe! The often fickle nature of grief may lead us to think we’re in the clear. We’re on solid ground, we can clearly see what lies ahead, and then – out of nowhere, we found ourselves with our nose on the pavement.
These moments come, and they often come when least expected. Something we see, something we hear, someone we see, someone’s voice we hear – anything at all can send us back in time. A “flashback” is what some may call that. It may be pleasant or it may be very unpleasant.
In working with grieving folks, I often hear something like “I wish I could get that image out of my mind.” A painful image is seared into their mind, seemingly immovable. And these images may bolt into our thoughts at the most inopportune times. When these images are locked into our conscious mind or even our unconscious mind, it does seem almost impossible to erase. Nevertheless, I am reassured by countless experiences in which I have witnessed the powerful ability of the human spirit to push the negative out by bringing the positive in.
Sometimes this is difficult without the help of a professional. In individual counseling, we can assist and guide grieving folks along the path of recovery from some of the most painful places of grieving. We may offer a hand or simply stand beside them, encouraging their next timid steps along the way.
When “flashbacks” come, know that this is often part of the grieving process. Also know that Alive Grief Support Services is staffed with professionals who are willing to offer assistance in this challenging process. Maybe a session or two is what will help get you back on your way. Or perhaps a few more or even a support group would be most helpful. As you begin to stroll down your own unique path, if you think it might help, give us a call at 615-963-4732.
